Blackberry & Red Onion Chutney

This is a great way to utilize fruit that is past its best.  Here we used some Blackberries that needed to be used up.


  • Blackberries
  • Red Onion Diced
  • Bay leaf
  • 3 Cloves
  • Balsamic Vinegar (3 Tbsp)
  • Red Wine Vinegar (1 Tbsp)
  • Red Wine or Port (1/2 Cup)
  • Sugar (1 Teaspoon)
  • Salt &  Pepper
  • Olive Oil (to sweat onions)
With a little olive oil – sweat down onions to soften.
Add fruit, bay and cloves then cook over a low heat. Once the fruit has broken down add the liquids. Then cook down over a low heat. When it becomes thick and syrup like season with salt & pepper..

Pass through a sieve and cool.
We served it here with some blue cheese with a 1955 port.
