Shop Small Saturday began over ten years ago. Launched by American Express as a way to help small businesses gain exposure and to encourage communities to shop their main streets, the idea took off.
My favorite shopping memories are of small shops my mother and I would visit in Northampton or Newburyport, Massachusetts. Shops with a story or a feeling about them. Shops you couldn’t wait to visit at Christmastime or for that special birthday gift. Indie bookstores you could spend hours in. Many of my favorites are long gone, but so many of the treasures we bought there are still with me. Purposeful gifts made to last.
At the time I didn’t think past the aesthetics of the space or the products inside. I didn’t think of the details that go into owning and running a small shop. The research that goes into selecting goods and how important the makers are. Here at Charlotte Julienne, the products we stock have to meet certain criteria. The packaging is the first thing we notice, and if it isn’t on brand it doesn’t matter how good the item on the inside is. Likewise, the inside has to match the outside and if it doesn’t it’s not for us. Lastly is the maker. Who are they? What is their story? Do our values on small batch ideals align?
On Shop Small Saturday we will be open from 9-6. Your visit to our store does not just support our family- you are supporting your community where we are leasing a storefront, the makers who are providing beautiful products, and the idea that main streets are valuable to little towns. Thank you for shopping small.
